The Lost Coast

The Lost Coast is a development-free area (too difficult to access) of the California North Coast in Humboldt and Mendocino Counties, which includes the King Range. It is the most seismically active area in California and has only one poorly maintained road.  This is a scary, bumpy, and spectacular scenic drive from the redwoods of Humboldt Redwoods State park to Victorian Ferndale. You travel through high alpine forests, on the edge of steep drop-offs to the water's edge with spectacular views along the northern edge of  the King Range. The road is winding, full of potholes, very narrow, and extremely steep that descends and then ascends the King Range multiple times. We would not drive it again due to very poor road conditions as well as a super high fear factor.

It was named the "Lost Coast" after the area experienced depopulation in the 1930s

Our GPS on the Lost Coast

The King Range protects the Humboldt Redwoods from high winds and ocean fog and is the reason the trees are larger here.
