Salmon Shores, Olympia WA

Image
The setting was pretty but the park was rough, to say the least. We made our reservation months in advance and were lucky to have been given the only site that wasn̢۪t being lived in by a permanent resident. Dock right on Black Lake. The scenery was beautiful. Full-time residents were jammed into the park. Lyle did an amazing job fitting us into the site they gave us. It was on such a hill that we almost scraped the trailer on the bed of the truck trying to hitch up on the way out. The Columbia Bar is the hazardous entrance to the Columbia River. We hiked the steep 0.75 mile trail to the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse. The Long Beach Peninsula' beach is 28 miles long, claimed to be the longest beach in the United States and the world's longest drivable beach, however is second to Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh (75 miles).

Central Oregon Coast

We're staying on Waohink Lake near Florence, OR. Florence sits on the Siuslaw River on the Central coast. The area is famous for its sea Sea Lion Caves, the restored 19th-century Heceta Head Lighthouse, and seabird and whale watching. Across the river is the towering Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Here there are low dunes that meet the river Lumber One of the many Art Deco bridges built in the 1920's and 30's  by  Conde B. McCullough.  Our RV spot Shopping This drawbridge was actually stuck open for several minutes while traffic backed up in both directions. These decorative sea lions are found throughout the area (Jan's favorite). Coastal dunes It's steeper than it looks and fun to slide down.  Heceta bridge and tunnel near the lighthouse.   The Heceta light is the brightest one still operating on the entire Oregon Coast. We watched sea lions and gray whales from this amazing vantage
