Grassy prairies meet the mountains as we arrive at the park. Upper Waterton Lake Our "backyard" at the RV site is a field full of wild rose bushes, Alberta's provincial (state) flower. Horses and cows graze nearby. Rather an idyllic spot! A new plant, purchased in the last town, to replace the ones eaten by the elk :) Crooked Creek campground is named after the water that flows through it. Kids and adults have been swimming and wading in it to cool off from the temps in the upper 70’s. View to the south from our campsite. The Prince of Wales Hotel sits way up on a hill overlooking the lake and the town of Waterton. Waterton Lakes Martini matches the lake's color (Blue Curacao and Raspberry Vodka) View from the hotel of the lake and the hillside burned in the Kenow fire in September 2017. This photo shows how close the fire was. The firefighters saved the town and the hotel but half the park is closed while they rebuild roads, trails, and buildings that were burned. The "township" of Waterton is across the bay from the hotel. The hotel and town were saved from the fire, but 50% of the rest park was destroyed People kayaking on this gorgeous lake. I spotted these 3 Westies waiting patiently while their owners ate at the outdoor cafe. This is the MV International boat, constructed here on the lake in 1928, that took us on a 2-hour tour of the lake. There is a bike trail all along the lake that takes you into town. The other ride was on a road that's open only to biking and walking while they repair damage from the fire. We really appreciated the electric bikes on both of these rides because the inclines are so steep and long. Great fun going down the hills, though. A sunset at the campground. The wildflowers are apparently more beautiful than ever due to increased rainfall this past spring. They add beauty to the hillsides that are charred while they begin new growth. This cute cut-out along the road was a reminder that you should always take bear precautions. We had actually just seen a black sow (mama bear) with triplet cubs on the hillside while driving in the truck. They were a dark brown variety of the black bear, not to be confused with grizzlies. Downtown Okotoks, Alberta is a suburb of Calgary. Just a short stop at this cute little town on our way down to Waterton Lakes and Glacier National Parks. This building was a church, now converted into a restaurant where we ate lunch. Celebrating Canada Day (July 1st) Great sign at a local bike shop. Red and white everywhere to celebrate Canada's flag on Canada day. Sunset reflected on the trailer's windows. Sunset is officially at 9:51 PM and this pink glow lasted for at least 45 minutes.
